To be Her

To be her

She is here

and Her life is in peril.

Her life is at trial, She is the lawyer and the defendant,

it is up to them if they want to let Her live or to end it.

She is on a scale, Her life is weighed.

They decide Her price,

they decide if She’s worth the inconvenience.

Do they commit murder or show Her some lenience?

Oh good heavens they let Her live!

She may be alive, but will She persist?

Will She make something of Herself or Her life will go down the garbage?

Will She be successful or have a man marry Her and “pound it”?

Alas! Her stars – not in alignment.

There is a new man in Her life, Her new tyrant.

They complete the seven rounds, Her father pays the price

now She is stuck at home being someone’s wife.

She asks Herself

Is it a match-made or a slave trade?

Is She his queen or the only reason he has brought Her Here is to keep his laundry clean?

Will She get to start a new life or be confined to be a housewife?

Will She be his equal, a partner by his side?

It turns out Her being didn’t matter

because every time the husband chose the latter.

She is left in the kitchen, She is left devastated,

She works all day, She keeps the house in place,

every day She wakes up, realizes that Her life has gone to waste

She breaks down, She is on Her knees.

Her life was at trial, She was the lawyer and the defendant,

and unfortunately, She lost it.

Her family failed Her.

Her husband failed Her.

Her country failed Her.

Her government failed Her.

Humankind failed Her.

She failed to stop a cycle that’s endless.

Her daughter will grow up the same way, She’s helpless!

She wishes there was a way She could end this.

42% of married women in India were married as children,

society is their cruel and despicable villain.

There were 2.4 million female feticides last decade,

gender equality in India is nothing but a charade.

How do we fight this discrimination?

How do we build a strong foundation?

How do we ensure men and women live together as equals?

How do we ensure that our daughters grow up in a just nation?

How do we ensure a world where women grow up to be happy and live a life of quality?

How do we ensure justice and gender equality?
